Join our Technical Department in a key leadership role supporting the Technical Manager while leading, managing, and developing the Lighting and Sound teams. You’ll play a central part in welcoming and coordinating visiting companies, overseeing their technical and staffing requirements, delivering productions and events to the highest standards of safety and compliance, and ensuring our venue’s equipment and infrastructure are maintained to an exceptional level.

This full-time, permanent position offers the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic, collaborative technical team at the heart of our venue’s operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on the safe and efficient  fit-ups, load-outs, and show operations in line with legislation and visiting company requirements.

  • Enforce safe working practices, ensuring  trained and competent staff appropriate to the operational requirements.

  • Supporting the Technical Manager ensure that all activities, infrastructure and equipment meet regulations and ATG Policies Procedures and guidance.

  • Manage the safe operation, maintenance, testing and repair of all venue electrical and technical infrastructure and equipment.

  • Service, maintain, and install electrical equipment in accordance with current IEE regulations.

  • Monitor and coordinate external contractors, ensuring all work meets required standards and Health & Safety obligations.

  • Work with the city council and partner agencies to ensure compliance for visiting productions.

 Operational Requirements

  • Schedule and resource technical staff through effective long-term planning, costing, and compliance with working-time and union agreements.

  • Work closely with visiting companies to meet technical needs economically and within contractual terms.

  • Communicate seat removals or layout changes to Box Office, Marketing, and Front of House.

  • Ensure all expenditure aligns with agreed budgets and ATG finance policies.

Technical

  • Lead all Lighting and Sound activity, ensuring productions and events are delivered to the highest standard.

  • Work with the Technical Manager and Head of Stage to ensure all production requirements are met efficiently.

  • Plan ahead and schedule technical staff effectively, producing and approving rosters in good time.

  • Provide excellent customer care to producers, touring companies, and production teams in partnership with Technical and Stage Door teams.

  • Act as a primary contact for visiting companies, responding promptly and professionally.

  • Assist with get-ins/get-outs and operate as duty technician or console operator when required.

  • Train and develop technical staff to meet business needs.

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, inspections, and insurance checks.

  • Attend technical meetings and communicate company processes, updates, and goals.

Safety

  • Support the implementation and monitoring of Health & Safety procedures in line with legislation for staff and visiting companies.

  • Ensure backstage and technical operations comply with legislation and ATG policies, with all documentation completed to a high standard.

  • Carry out and regularly review Risk Assessments and Method Statements.

  • Action safety points raised through audits or meetings within agreed timescales.

Maintenance

  • Work with the Technical Manager and Head of Stage to ensure backstage and auditorium areas are presented to the highest standards and remain safe.

  • Develop, plan, and participate in maintenance, inspections, and testing of all technical infrastructure and equipment.

Staff Development, Training & Communication

  • Support the development of a skilled, cohesive, and motivated team through strong communication, training, and development.

  • Ensure all ATG HR policies and procedures are implemented.

  • Assist in recruiting, training, and managing staff to achieve departmental and business objectives.

  • Participate in company, venue, and departmental meetings to ensure clear and consistent communication.

Other Duties

  • Work at other ATG venues when required.

  • Undertake any reasonable duties and training as needed.

Essential

  • Proven experience working on medium to large-scale touring productions, either from a receiving house or touring company perspective.

  • Demonstrable experience in both leading and contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.

  • Proficient in the setup, operation, and live mixing of lighting for theatrical productions and live events.

  • Extensive experience in programming and operating lighting using ETC Eos-family consoles, with a high level of proficiency expected. Familiarity with the Apex 10 desk is desirable, with the ability to deliver complex lighting states accurately and efficiently under production conditions.

  • A versatile and experienced multi-skilled theatre technician, confident across a broad range of technical disciplines.

  • Practical experience and competence in the use of counterweight (single purchase) flying systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate colleagues and a strong commitment to both personal and team development.

  • A proactive, solution-focused approach to problem solving, with the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.

  • Sound working knowledge of current health and safety legislation, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM), the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR), the Lifting.

  • Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), and the Provision and Use of Wok Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), with the ability to apply these principles effectively within a practical theatre environment.

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, as required by the production schedule.

  • A genuine enthusiasm for live performance and a commitment to delivering high-quality technical support to artists, creatives, and audiences alike.

Desirable

  • Formal training in Manual Handling and Working at Height, with the ability to apply safe working practices in line with current legislation.

  • Current First Aid at Work certification.

  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) qualification, with the ability to conduct and document inspections in accordance with safety standards.

  • IOSH Managing Safely certificate or equivalent, demonstrating a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and legally compliant working environment.

  • Qualification or proven competency in the safe use and handling of stage pyrotechnics.

  • A working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSAW), with the ability to support its practical application in a technical theatre setting.

  • Understanding of domestic electrical installation principles, with working knowledge of relevant regulations and best practices.

  • Certificates in BS 7909:2011 Code of Practice for Temporary Electrical Systems for Entertainment and related purposes and its implementation in live performance environments and BS 7671:2018 (IET Wiring Regulations), particularly in relation to theatre installations and temporary power systems.

  • General understanding of building maintenance requirements and the ability to identify and report issues appropriately.

  • Working knowledge of the BECTU/UK Theatre collective agreement, with an understanding of relevant working practices and conditions.

  • Experience in relighting touring or transferred productions, with sensitivity to both the artistic intent and practical constraints of the receiving venue.

Cameron Mackintosh Ltd is seeking an experienced individual to join the International Department. The ideal candidate will be someone who prioritises and strives for artistic excellence. 

The Production Coordinator supports the Associate Producer responsible for international productions, the Technical Director and Licensing Manager with the management of CML’s international productions, is responsible for the day-to-day management of certain areas of specific CML international productions and is a principal point of contact for internal and external colleagues. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

  • At least two years’ experience of musicals and/or plays in a professional theatre environment, ideally in commercial theatre.

  • Discrete and professional manner.

  • Ability to be proactive and plan ahead.

  • Positive attitude.

  • Organised, efficient, with a high level of attention to detail and able to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Attentive to the requirements of the Associate Producer and Technical Director.

  • Ability to remain calm and patient during difficult situations or in a very busy environment. 

  • Flexible approach to work as some weekend and evening work will be required.

Main Duties on Specified Productions 

  • Reporting directly to the Associate Producer and working with both the Technical Director and Licensing Manager, as required, on CML’s international productions.

  • Deputising for the Associate Producer for holidays, sickness or other absences.

  • Working with the Associate Producer to ensure that the Global Schedule and Global Staffing Schedule are kept up to date on a weekly basis and that production information is communicated both internally and externally.

  • Working closely with the Associate Producer, Technical Director and production managers on the management of productions.

  • Ensuring that production correspondence received from international producing companies is responded to in a timely manner.

  • Organising travel, accommodation, work permit, visa, travel insurance and per diem logistics for CML staff, creative team and production staff, as required, as well as monitoring logistics arranged by international production companies.

  • Assisting the Associate Producer, Technical Director and production managers in drafting and proofing production budgets. 

  • In conjunction with the marketing department, coordinating the requirements for marketing, press and promotional activities, ensuring that marketing and press materials are creatively and contractually correct and gaining creative approval from the Associate Producer and Executive Producer.

  • In conjunction with the marketing department, overseeing the delivery of production programmes, compiling biographies and other information required by international production companies, proofing drafts and gaining creative approval from the Associate Producer and Executive Producer.

  • Working with the Associate Producer on the organisation of opening night performances, including CML guest lists, opening night cards and other logistics.

  • Coding and approving invoices as required by the Associate Producer and Technical Director.

  • Updating global sales figures for international productions on a regular basis, as required. 

  • Maintaining a record of all fees and other contractual terms for creative and production teams working on international productions.

  • Processing information requests for potential international productions, as required, responding as appropriate and reporting relevant information and questions to the Associate Producer, Technical Director, Licensing Manager and other CML colleagues.

  • Organising meetings and conference calls, as required.

  • Working with the Associate Producer, Technical Director and Licensing Manager to maintain digital filing systems for international productions.

Lighting Technician

We are looking for a Lighting Technician to join our Team.

 

Whether on our stages at our home on The Cut, touring to schools and community centres across south London, premiering a play in the West End or on Broadway, streaming our work across the country and around the world – the Young Vic is actively working to be a theatre for everyone.  

 

The Production Department

The purpose of the Production Department is to create and run all the technical elements of the Young Vic’s programme – this includes our productions, projects and events, in the main house, studios, digital ‘stages’, and across the creative engagement and talent development departments. The Production Department builds strong relationships with freelance, in-house creative teams, and other artistic personnel to deliver their creative vision within the agreed timescales and budgets, to the highest possible standards.

The Role

The Lighting Technician will work as part of the Production Department to deliver high-quality lighting for Young Vic productions and related projects, operating and programming lighting systems across multiple spaces. The role involves supporting fit-ups, get-outs and maintenance of technical equipment, and operation for productions, while working closely with creative teams to realise designs.

You’ll report to the Head of Lighting and Sound and be responsible for casual technicians. You’ll also work closely with the Senior Technician - Sound, Senior Technician - Stage, Head of Stage, and the Technical Manager.

This role is an integral part of the technical team within this busy regional venue. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate extensive experience in the technical aspects of theatre craft and have a background in facilitating shows. You will be a good team player with excellent communication skills, computer literate and have the ability to lead and motivate others. You will have a good working knowledge of current health and safety legislation, along with modern theatre technology systems.

The Senior Technician – Lighting will work closely with the BOH Team to manage technical systems with responsibility for all aspects including but not limited to: in-service and testing of electrical equipment, equipment scheduling, lighting and sound systems, assist in stage and Flys and maintenance, and liaise with visiting companies, providing expertise on the venue’s capabilities.

Key responsibilities

  • To work as part of the crew ensuring the smooth running of fit ups, get outs and shows, in line with health and safety legislation and the requirements of the visiting company, and in accordance with the BECTU Code of Conduct.

  • To complete regular inspections of technical equipment within the venue in line with health and safety legislative requirements alongside the Head of Lighting and Sound.

  • To work closely with the visiting companies to ensure their technical needs are met, and ensure all crew are working in a pro-active manner.

  • To ensure that only qualified, trained and experienced personnel are allowed to operate technical equipment within the venue. Operate a skills matrix with the Head of Lighting & Sound and the Head of Stage to ensure that the right skills are in place and fully utilised

  • Ensuring that all backstage areas and storage are kept to the highest possible standard, and to bring any difficulties and/or health and safety hazards to the attention of the Head of Lighting & Sound and the Head of Stage.

  • Alongside the other members of the electrics team, to take responsibility for housekeeping and maintenance of the electrics workshop.

  • To develop risk assessments with the Head of Lighting & Sound, ensuring that these are reviewed annually.

  • To set up equipment for other events throughout the venue when required.

  • To implement and comply with the company Health & Safety Policy, maintaining the safest possible environment for your colleagues, visiting companies and customers.

  • To act as a Duty Technician during performances, carry out regular lamp rounds of all areas of the building as part of pre-show checks, and take on an investigative role in the event of fire alarm activations.

  • To assist with end-of-day lockups where required.

  • Where required, to assist in the smooth running of visiting productions by taking on show specific roles (e.g. stage plots/board operation) as and when appropriate.

  • To attend regular team meetings with other members of the technical department, and wider back of house team, to liaise on venue operations, health and safety, and to discuss forthcoming show requirements.

  • To be trained in First Aid at Work and keep it renewed.

  • To undertake all mandatory training identified as relevant to the role.

  • To assist the Head of Lighting and Sound and Head of Stage in managing casual staff.

  • To work closely with the Senior Technician (Sound) in order to understand the full range of the venue electrics department, and be able to provide mutual cover where appropriate.

  • To undertake any other duties as required by the Head of Lighting & Sound and Head of Stage.
