You will negotiate with and oversee any contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers who are engaged to carry out work to Polka’s buildings and facilities, achieving best value service.
Polka’s recently redeveloped building comprises of: two performance spaces, rehearsal/community space, kitchen, café and shop, outdoor play areas, offices, dressing rooms and a newly refurbished flat. Polka also has an offsite workshop on Batsworth Road in Mitcham and from time-to-time host events at other venues, and you will be required to support the teams working there.
Salary: £29,000 to 32,000 FTE per year pro rata, depending on experience (so, 4 days per week would be £23,200 – 25,600, for example).
Hours: 3 or 4 days per week (24 or 32 hours per week including a lunch break of 1 hour). You may need to work some additional hours, including evenings and weekends, and travel out of London when required (we operate a Time Off In Lieu, 'TOIL' system).

Purpose of Post
The Assistant Technical Manager - Music (ATM) will report to the Technical Manager – Music and assist in the event planning and delivery of the Barbican music programme of over 250 concerts annually to one world-class standard. In assisting in the allocation of our talented technical team, the ATM will ensure that all artistic events and related activity are staffed, equipped, and budgeted for, including live-streamed events.
The ATM will also work alongside the Barbican Music Production Team, advancing events across the full range of the Barbican Centre’s music output, from Classical, Jazz, and Contemporary, by organising the department’s technical hires, freelancer bookings and performance requirements. Forging and maintaining good relations with associates, freelancers and suppliers is an essential part of the role.
Alongside the department’s main output, the ATM will assist in overseeing and booking the equipment requirements for all set-ups, soundchecks, rehearsals, use of our recording studio, and get-ins/outs for the Centre’s music events, all within budget and on time.
The ATM will aid the Technical Management Department in developing the technical team to their best ability by supporting professional development and by identifying key training and career opportunities.
The ATM will work alongside and assist the other Technical Managers and Technical Supervisors with technical equipment purchases and general upkeep of spaces to ensure all health & safety protocols are met and exceeded.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
1. To report to the Technical Manager – Music and work alongside the other Technical Managers to assist the delivery of over 250 events per year to one international standard, reflecting the Barbican’s standing as a world-class arts centre and conference venue.
2. To work with the Music Production team on the advance and delivery of music events, offering technical support, and to organise equipment and freelancer hires.
3. To attend production meetings, including site visits where necessary. This may involve weekend and evening work, so some flexibility is required. The postholder will be on the rota system.
4. To assist in the day-to-day operation of the stage and technical systems, ensuring that high standards of service are maintained, and Safe Systems of Work are adhered to, in all Music Department venues.
5. To support the Technical Management Team with feasibility studies, capital projects and equipment acquisitions.
6. To keep up to date with technical developments within the Events sector, and to maintain general technical knowledge in all areas including AV, sound, lighting, and stage equipment.
7. To support the Senior Technical Manager, when needed, in the Health and Safety function for the Music Department.
